Oktoberfest, held annually in Munich, Germany, is the world’s largest beer festival. While it’s internationally known for its massive beer halls and spirited revelries, many people might be surprised to learn that Oktoberfest is also a family-friendly event with a rich array of activities and traditions suitable for visitors of all ages. Oktoberfest isn’t just beer tents. A significant portion of the festival is similar to a state fair with various rides, roller coasters, giant wheels, and traditional carousel rides. On Tuesday’s, from 12 noon to 6 pm, families can enjoy discounted prices on rides and performances.

Some sections of the Oktoberfest grounds are specifically designed for children. These areas have age-appropriate rides, games, and attractions, such as puppet shows, mini roller coasters and merry-go-rounds. Families can enjoy traditional food and music, with delicacies including pretzels, bratwurst, roast chicken, chocolate and sweets. One of the highlights for families is the traditional riflemen’s parade, which showcases traditional costumes from different Bavarian regions, historical uniforms, horses, and local music bands.

With Halloween around the corner, why not embrace the spirit? Edinburgh, Scotland, known for its haunted tales, offers ghost tours that can be thrilling for older kids and adults alike. The Real Mary King’s Close is an underground journey through Edinburgh’s centuries-old alleys, where guides share eerie tales of the past. It’s both a historical and spooky venture. Not to far from Scotland you will find Leap Castle, Ireland. This castle is considered one of the most haunted castles globally. Its history is filled with battles, betrayals, and executions. Visits are available Monday to Friday by appointment only. Enter if you dare!

The United States is home to many spooky attractions as well. Probably the most famous is Salem, Massachusetts. The city, infamous for its witch trials, hosts a series of events throughout October, including re-enactments, ghost tours, and themed parties. New Orleans, Louisiana is known for its rich history and voodoo culture. Haunted cemetery tours and ghost walks are popular here. Bodie, California is a preserved ghost town. Bodie offers a glimpse into the abandoned life of a gold rush town. Visiting at dusk adds to the eerie atmosphere. Savannah, Georgia is a city built on cemeteries. While it’s one of the most beautiful cities I’ve ever seen, it’s also one of the most haunted. Ghost tours take place here almost every evening and if you are lucky, you may see some action in the cemetery at the “edge” of town.
